March is Nutrition Month, facilitated each year by Dietitians of Canada, and this year’s theme is unlocking the potential of food.

Throughout the 2022/23 school year Farm to Cafeteria Canada has been celebrating the theme of “Food Connects”, honouring the power of food to connect us to so much of the world around us.
In honour of Nutrition Month 2023, we are sharing 2 key ways to
unlock the potential of school food to connect us:
Make some noise for school food by participating in the Great Big Crunch!
The Great Big Crunch is an original initiative from FoodShare Toronto, started in 2008, and it has grown into a Canada-wide event that demonstrates anti-silence in support of a universal school food program by crunching together at the same time in an apple (or other crunchy fruit or vegetable).

The Great Big Crunch is now facilitated by the Coalition for Healthy School Food and they’ve prepared some great resources, including an Activity Toolkit and Communications Toolkit  to make crunching easy and fun!

Crunch with your class, crunch at work or home, or organize a fun video call with your colleagues and crunch together.

Show your support by Crunching anytime throughout the month of March OR join in on a nation-wide virtual Crunch happening on Thursday March 9th, International School Meals Day.

Map the change you want to see in school food by registering on the School Food Map!
Canada’s School Food Map is an important tool for documenting school food activity in Canada which helps to inform program and policy development. It’s also a great way to find and connect with school food champions in your region – or across the country!

If you’re a SCHOOL, getting on the map will let you:

  1. Share/celebrate your school’s efforts
  2. Help other schools connect with you
  3. Contribute to the national data of school food activity in Canada that will help inform program and policy development

If you’re a FARMER, FOOD PROVIDER or other COMMUNITY PARTNER, getting on the map will:

  1. Communicate what you can offer to schools and other partners working in this area
  2. Find schools to connect and share your services with
  3. Contribute to the national data of school food activity in Canada that will help inform program and policy development

Registration is open to schools AND community partners, including farmers and other food providers.
