Position Summary

As a volunteer* policy board, Farm to Cafeteria Canada’s directors are active champions of the organization who provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. Directors at Large bring a range of knowledge and expertise, may sit on or chair strategic working groups, and have the potential to advance into Executive positions on the Board.

Board members serve two-year terms, with potential for up to a maximum of three consecutive terms.

Board meetings are held  6-8 times per year. One annual strategic planning retreat (virtual or in-person, if feasible) may be held with F2CC staff, Implementation Partners and Advisory Council members. The average monthly time commitment of Board members is 8-10 hours.

*Service on F2CC’s Board of Directors is without remuneration. Costs incurred as part of performing Board duties (ex. travel, accommodations) will be reimbursed in accordance with organizational policy

About Farm to Cafeteria Canada

Farm to Cafeteria Canada (F2CC) is a pan-Canadian partnership-based registered Charity whose purpose is to transform how food is experienced, learned and celebrated in all schools across Canada.

As a BC-based Society with a nationwide mandate, F2CC Board membership is open to applicants from across Canada. Board business is conducted in English; however, fluency in French is considered an asset. Meetings are held virtually, and access to a stable internet connection is required.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Champion the organization’s cause.
  • Set and maintain governing policies of the organization.
  • Provide strategic leadership and ensure goal-setting in service to F2CC’s vision and mission.
  • Maintain the financial well-being of the organization, ensuring necessary resources are available; approve annual budgets and audit reports.
  • Ensure effective monitoring and reporting on organizational outcomes and impacts in support of its identified charitable Purposes.
  • Ensure F2CC’s commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and social justice is implemented and upheld across the organization.
  • Adhere to the organization’s bylaws and ensure compliance with legal and financial reporting requirements.
  • Hire and evaluate the Executive Director and serve as a trusted advisor to them and other staff.
  • Consult with F2CC’s program Advisory Councils and Implementation Partners on an as-needed basis.
  • Maintain the health of the Board through recruitment, training, self-assessment, and continuous learning opportunities.
  • Act with ethical and legal integrity, maintaining the best interests of the organization. 

Qualifications & Requirements

Ideal candidates:

  • Are passionate about and committed to F2CC’s purpose and beliefs, and are excited to grow awareness of the organization and its work.
  • Have previous experience on a governance board (non-profit experience considered an asset).
  • Bring demonstrated leadership skills and a commitment to collaborative governance. 
  • Communicate effectively, both written and verbally; fluency in French is considered an asset.
  • Value collaboration and innovative thinking. 
  • Are informed, available, reliable, and committed to engaging in Board duties (may include within and outside of regular business hours).
  • Have expertise in at least one of the following areas:
    • Sustainable business growth and development
    • Charitable finance and administration
    • Fundraising
    • Legal and risk management
    • Governance policy
    • Human Resources
    • Partnership development
    • Strategic marketing and communications
