Oakridge Public School, Mississauga, ON
Grant term 2023-24

Nestled in the serene landscape of Oakridge Public School, a healthy initiative blossomed – the Farm to School Dig In! Seed Grants Program. In this haven of learning, where the laughter of children harmonized with the rustle of leaves, young minds from Kindergarten to Grade 5 students embarked on a journey that transcended textbooks and classrooms. Led by the Cooksmart team, students delved into the art of healthy eating, crafting delectable creations straight from the heart of nature.

For the hundred eager students at Oakridge PS, the Farm to School Dig In! Seed Grants Program wasn’t just an extracurricular activity; it was a voyage of discovery. With each Cooksmart workshop, students peeled back the layers of nutrition, unveiling the vibrant colors and flavours of fruits and vegetables. From the crisp crunch of apples to the succulent sweetness of berries, they savored the essence of nature’s bounty, one bite at a time.

Under the guidance of dedicated educators, the students transformed into culinary maestros, using cutting tools and measuring cups with precision and finesse. In the kitchen, they weren’t just cooking; they were architects of their own health, learning to nourish their bodies and minds with wholesome ingredients. As they chopped, blended, and mixed, they absorbed invaluable lessons in teamwork, responsibility, and creativity.

Over the course of ten workshops, students embarked on a culinary odyssey, crafting an array of nutritious delights that tantalized the taste buds and nourished the soul. From vibrant fruit parfaits that resembled edible rainbows to velvety smoothies bursting with flavor, each creation was a testament to their newfound skills and passion for healthy living. A grade five student noted, “I enjoyed the opportunities to learn about fruits and vegetables that I’ve never tasted before.  We learned how to prepare the foods and mix them together to make a delicious treat!”

But it wasn’t just about the food; it was about the journey—the shared moments of laughter, camaraderie, and discovery that bonded them together like family. In the kitchen, age and grade dissolved, replaced by a spirit of collaboration and unity. Together, they chopped, stirred, and tasted, forging memories that they connected to in the classroom.

As the aroma of freshly prepared snacks wafted through the air, it ignited a spark of curiosity and excitement that extended far beyond the school walls. As the school year drew to a close, the students stood tall, their hearts brimming with pride at all they had accomplished. In their hands, they held more than just recipes; they held the keys to a healthier, happier future. And as they bid farewell to Oakridge Public School, they carried with them the indelible lessons of the Farm to School Dig In! Seed Grants Program—a legacy of empowerment, nourishment, and the boundless potential of young hearts and minds.
