On Tuesday October 28, 2025, Schreiber Public School – in partnership with Terrace Bay Public School, Lake Superior High School, Pays Plat First Nation, Filane’s Restaurant, and Farm to Cafeteria Canada funding – hosted our community conversation. It was held at our school in the gymnasium and resulted in 75 people attending the conversation.

There was representation from partners on our project, families of children who attend all local elementary schools and our local First Nation that our school serves. The event was held from 6:00 to 7:30pm and featured an experiential learning carousel, charcuterie dinner, and then community conversation around experiential learning and the positive impact of culturally-relevant content on attendance which is known to drive achievement. The event was championed by Mr. Aaron Fewkes, Mrs. Laurie Foster, and Mrs. Amy Buchan who are the administrators at our local schools.

We asked four questions of attendees that focused on: priorities of the community, relevant and authentic voice in learning, identifying potential barriers, and how to drive enthusiasm for future learning. The questions were reviewed by the hosts and left on tables for table conversation and jot notes about the conversation to be written down. The organizers cycled through tables prompting and engaging in the conversation to result in deeper data. The conversation data was then compiled and shared with all three schools to drive future school improvement planning and actions.
As it relates to the Greenhouse project, we were happy to receive feedback showing that we are on the right pathway, but as a next step the expansion of the greenhouse passion project to provide both fresh and dried herbs to both communities of Schreiber and Terrace Bay, Ontario, is necessary. This is where future funding from Farm to Cafeteria funding would be critical to ongoing success.
