School Description
The NDM Cantine offers a food program at École Notre Dame des Monts in Canmore that did not have any food programs primarily due to lack of a commercial kitchen, cafeteria space or funding for a chef. The NDM Cantine was started by Avni Soma, a community food advocate and sustainable sourcing strategist, who also brings food systems literacy into the program. Avni has been running NDM Cantine as a passionate parent volunteer and works with Indigenous chef, Damian of Mountain Fire Foods. And some of her inspiration comes from sitting on various boards and groups that are advocating for a National School Food Program. Canada is the only G7 country without a school food program. Avni brings her strong knowledge, experience and relationships with our local food system to NDM Cantine. For the 2023/2024 school year, we started up the program again because of the requests from parents and students. Avni continues to send an email before each meal with details about the ethical sourcing (i.e. farmer story or relationship, cultural significance of a food, environmental impact, supporting local businesses, etc...).
