General Information
The Farm to School Snack program grew out of a desire to contribute to the overall health of Nova Scotians while increasing opportunities for the local agriculture industry, acknowledging the benefits that come with eating locally farmed produce. The Annapolis Valley Farm to School Committee’s vision is that all children in Nova Scotia will have improved access, understanding and increased consumption of locally grown vegetables and fruit, creating long-term healthy eating habits, reducing chronic disease, and supporting NS farms.
The Farm to School Snack is a monthly program that provides locally grown vegetables and fruit from Annapolis Valley farms to students in participating schools in the Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education. The snack program is run by dedicated volunteers within each school, with on-going program support from the Farm to School Coordinator. Local produce is purchased by schools at fair market value, brought to the schools (through a variety of delivery models), after which volunteers prepare and serve the produce to all students and staff. Accompanying information sheets highlight the local farm, the nutritional value of the vegetables and fruit, fun facts for the students and classroom activities for the teaching staff.
