School Description

Maaqtusiis Secondary School, located in the remote coastal community of Ahousaht, BC, is revitalizing its school garden to grow food, share cultural knowledge, and build student leadership. Our Roots to Resilience: Ahousaht’s Food Sovereignty Project integrates traditional and contemporary food systems, bringing together students, Knowledge Keepers, teachers, and community members. Students plant and care for vegetables, herbs, berries, and pollinator flowers in our outdoor beds and greenhouse. They learn to prepare and preserve food, from making salsa and pasta sauce to smoking and celebrating fish caught locally. Classes also explore sustainable food production, seed saving, and land-based harvesting. Our program is rooted in cultural connection and celebrates Nuu-chah-nulth teachings about food, respect, and reciprocity. Through cooking and tasting sessions, shared meals, and seasonal feasts, we strengthen food security, inspire healthy eating, and nurture a love for growing food from seed to table.
