A Healthy Eating Framework for After-School Programs

The YMCA Healthy Eating Framework was designed to help After-School programs incorporate healthy eating throughout all their program components. The framework’s flexible design enables programs to build on existing strengths and to tailor actions to the local context, addressing needs and challenges and maximizing resources and opportunities. The framework contains six elements and is targeted to After-School program staff and those others connected to the programs.

Its purpose is to:

  • Support children to develop positive connections to food and their lives by learning about healthier foods and having fun while preparing and eating them.
  • Provide positive “hands-on” nutrition programming that is relevant, fun, engaging, and age and culturally appropriate.
  • Develop positive linkages and engagement about food and healthy eating with other adults involved in the child’s care – families, teachers, and health care/public health professionals – at home, school, and in the broader community.
  • Provide consistent, positive reinforcement about healthy eating habits throughout all components of the After-School program.
