BC Foods Days and UNBC’s Food Strategy Group’s Kick-Off Event

The University of Northern British Columbia’s (UNBC) Campus Food Strategy Group (CFSG) is pleased to announce their official Kick-Off Event on October 23, 2012. This event will coincide with BC Foods Days, an annual collaboration between UNBC’s campus food service provider, Eurest Dining Services, and the Northern Undergraduate Students Society (NUGSS).

CFSG is excited to meet and greet with the campus community during their Kick-Off Event, which is being held in the UNBC Wintergarden. Beyond introducing themselves to students, faculty and staff, the CFSG will be looking for feedback on the current campus food system. “This will be an excellent opportunity for us to get valuable information from the UNBC community. We can learn how the campus food system is perceived and how we can all work together to continue to improve it,” said Nitha Karanja, CFSG coordinator

On October 23 &24, Eurest Dining Services’ Head Chef Rodney Mansbridge will be preparing a delicious menu featuring locally and provincially sourced ingredients in the UNBC Cafeteria. This menu will feature vegetarian and meat dishes inspired by seasonally available products. Northern Bioponics, Roger’s Custom Meats, Red Rooster Bakery, and Au Chocolate are just some of the local businesses that Rodney will source his ingredients from. “This is an exciting opportunity for us to work with NUGSS to demonstrate that as the campus food service provider, we are continually striving to meet the needs and desires of the UNBC community.” said Willie Lum, director of food services for Eurest UNBC.

These events are part of a national campaign that will see university campuses across Canada host similar events over a two week period. The Sierra Youth Coalition, Meal Exchange and Farm to Cafeteria Canada are among some of the national support groups that are promoting this campaign to demonstrate the need for sustainable campus food systems. “We are very excited to be apart of this campaign,” said UNBC’s sustainability manager, Alvaro Palazuelos. “This demonstrates UNBC’s commitment to a sustainable campus food system. As Canada’s Green University, it is essential that we are leading campuses across the county on sustainability initiatives. It’s a great addition to initiatives already on campus like the University Farmers’ Market, which occurs every Tuesday from 11am-3pm.”

UNBC’s CFSG, NUGSS and campus food service provider, Eurest are extremely proud to announce this collaborative event that highlights the level of commitment at UNBC to developing and attaining a sustainable campus food system.
